WHY WE LOVE...

Newton Abbot

In 1846, the South Devon Railway graced Newton Abbot, transforming it from a quaint market town into a bustling hub of communication and industry. The addition of branch lines to Torquay in 1848 and Moretonhampstead in 1866 further solidified Newton Abbot as a prime location for industrial progress.

The town’s modern landscape bears the charming imprints of this period, with noteworthy features like Courtenay Park and Devon Square—both elegant Victorian developments—and Mackrell’s Almshouses along Totnes Road. St Leonard’s Tower, situated in the town centre, stands as a historic remnant of a church demolished in 1836.

Delve into the town’s rich history, with a special focus on Brunel and the Great Western Railway, showcased in an excellent museum. Today, Newton Abbot flourishes as a significant shopping and commercial centre, the largest in South Devon.

You’ll find familiar superstores, high street names, and a thriving industrial and financial sector.

Market days on Wednesday and Saturday, which include an indoor pannier market, add to the town’s vibrant atmosphere. Don’t miss the weekly farmers’ market on Tuesdays in Courtenay Street and the annual Cheese and Onion Fair.

Among the town’s numerous attractions, Decoy Country Park on the outskirts, Plant World, and Orchid Paradise are noteworthy.

Explore the captivating Capability Brown garden at Ugbrooke House nearby. For those seeking a workout, the newly refurbished leisure centre offers a fitness suite, swimming pool, and fitness classes.

Within a short distance, you’ll find Stover Country Park with the Ted Hughes Poetry Trail, Trago Mills - an intriguing blend of discount warehouse and leisure park - and Canonteign Falls, England’s highest manmade waterfall.

On Haldon Hill, discover the cutting-edge Centre for Contemporary Arts and the Natural World, along with the Haldon Belvedere for spectacular views, and Haldon Forest Park for a unique woodland exploration experience.

Newton Abbot warmly invites you to explore its rich history, vibrant markets, and diverse attractions!
